Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf iraq information minister lying as art

Like many other armchair watchers of the war in Iraq, I found myself "almost" believing M.S.S. Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf.
His delivery had a maniacal wryness, that many found mesmerizing, the sheer outrageousness of the lies he was telling, must place M.S.S. at the top of the list of the world's greatest porky pie tellers...
A few examples here:

Self-deluded? Cunning? Or just downright comical? Whatever one's view of Iraqi Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, one can't deny his style.

Even Allah knows about him. After the Iranian news agency broke a story that he had committed suicide, a story started making its rounds, Allah sent down 62 angels to him, 2 angels to do the Arabic "hisab" (the post death balancing of the good deeds versus the bad deeds) and 60 angels to convince him that he was really dead.

Since Saddam Hussein went to ground, the clean-shaven, bespectacled Minister has become the public face and voice of the Iraqi regime, setting new standards of anti-American vitriol. "Blood-sucking bastards", ignorant imperialists, losers and fools are among his descriptions of the US and UK leaders. Undaunted by Coalition successes, he is apt to flatly deny what viewers around the world can see unfolding on their TV screens.

Holding a press briefing yesterday on the roof of the Information Ministry, he told reporters that Baghdad was safe, and that US troops were "committing suicide" at the gates, despite black smoke billowing behind him, and the sound of fighting echoing around the capital.

Sahaf (63), who once trained to be an English teacher, was Iraq's foreign minister for almost a decade and ambassador to India, Italy and the United Nations.

Considered close to Saddam but not part of the ruling elite, he has been used in the past to deliver some of Iraq's more conciliatory messages, such as an apology late last year to the people of Kuwait for the 1990 invasion of their country. His daily broadcasts from Baghdad - dubbed The al-Sahaf Show - have made him an unlikely media star, and hero to many in the Arab world. However, Faisal Salman, managing editor of the Lebanese newspaper As-Safir, notes viewers "don't exactly pause at what he says as much as they are eager to listen to his funny words".

Republican Guard commander cut deal with US forces

The mystery of what happened to the Iraqi Republican Guard defending Baghdad appears to have been solved if a report in Le Monde is to be believed.

The French daily reports that Maher Sufyan, Commander of the Republican Guard reached an agreement with American forces in which he ordered his forces to surrender in exchange for his transfer via an American Apache helicopter to an undisclosed safe haven.

Quoting anonymous sources, Le Monde’s correspondent in Baghdad said that Sufyan ordered all Republican Guard forces to lay down their arms and go home. Shortly thereafter an Apache helicopter escorted Sufyan from the Al Rashid camp, east of Baghdad, to an unknown location.

Maher Sufyan is not included on the infamous “deck of cards” created by US defence officials to highlight the most wanted individuals from the Saddam Hussein government. Iraq’s popular Information Minister, Mohammed Saeed Al Sahaf, Naji Sabri, Iraq’s Foreign Minister and Medhat Oumid, the minister of health are also not included on the list.
